DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand government has decided to give suitable jobs to one person of each family in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts of Garhwal division that lost a member in the flash floods and landslide of June 2013.
The decision was taken at a meeting of top officials headed by chief secretary Subhash Kumar on Tuesday. There were 848 families that lost a member in the tragedy from these districts.
The government has also decided to hike the compensation amount paid to each family from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh.
The meeting was held on instructions from chief minister Harish Rawat, in hospital in Delhi and set to undergo surgery.
The decision comes a day after the first anniversary of the June 16-17 catastrophe. Chief secretary Kumar told reporters that senior officials, including divisional commissioners and district magistrates have been asked to ascertain the exact number of those who will be entitled to jobs in different government departments, in accordance with
qualifications.
"once we get a list of those who will be entitled for jobs on compassionate grounds, we will begin the process of issuing them appointment letters," chief secretary kumar said.
A senior government official said as the process of ascertain the identity of those whose skeltons were recovered from the high altitude areas from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is still on, the government will provide an enhanced amount of compensation to their next of kin after the identity of the victims is established.
A senior IAS officer told TOI that a total of about 7000 family
members from Uttarakhand and other states, of those killed in the calamity had already been paid a compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh each, a couple of months after the flash floods.
A decision was also taken to name block headquarters after the victims of the tragedy, the chief secretary said.
